A summer spent observing an osprey nest in Skagit County will be discussed via Zoom. Later, a stand-up paddleboarder will talk about his adventures in Marysville.

Observation of a osprey nest to be discussed

“Ospreys — Life on a Cell Tower” is the title of a presentation by Skagit Audubon Society’s new vice president, John Farnsworth, fellow society member Charles Talman, who spent the summer monitoring an osprey nest atop a cell tower in the Swinomish Village in Skagit County.

The presentation is set for 7 p.m. Oct, 19 via Zoom.

The men spent hours every day observing the ospreys through spotting scopes from across the Swinomish Channel at the garden club’s butterfly garden, atop the hill in La Conner. They’ll share what they discovered, especially in terms of conflicts between eagles, the osprey, and even a peregrine falcon,

Outdoor speaker series to feature paddleboarder

Stand-up paddleboard enthusiast Brice Howard will guide the audience through the world of “SUP’ing” in the Pacific Northwest, in a presentation set for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Marysville Opera House, 1225 Third St., Marysville.

Howard will talk about how to get started, the basic gear needed for year-round adventures, safety considerations and where to paddle locally.

It’s one in a series of outdoor adventure speakers at the opera house on the second Tuesday of the month. Local authors, outdoor enthusiasts and naturalists share their adventures and expertise on topics including hiking, nature photography, mountain climbing, kayaking, boating and more.

Each presentation finishes up with a Q&A period.
